The ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ’s (UA) American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student Chapter delivered an impressive performance at the ASCE Regional Competitions in April, with several teams placing among the top and showcasing the strength, resilience and spirit of UA engineering students.
Construction Institute team members, from left, JoAnna Shafer (captain), Andrew Angelini, Ben Noirot and Lauren Larue represented UA with a second place finish at the ASCE regional competition.
The Construction Institute team earned a well-deserved second-place finish, with civil engineering student Andrew Angelini being named Best Speaker of the competition — an outstanding individual achievement.
Members of UA’s Concrete Canoe team, from left, Dante Anderson, Quinn Hall, Amelia Roch, Shawne-Marinn Murphy (captain), JoAnna Shafer, Jasmine Vamosi (captain), Ben Noirot, Caroline Sabo, Ryan Bailey, Megan McCracken, Ben Komar, Maddie Richards, Audrey Francis, Dr. David Roke (faculty advisor) and Lauren Larue earned a third place finish at the ASCE regional competition.
UA’s Concrete Canoe team earned a third-place finish, a remarkable result considering this is only the chapter’s third canoe since the team reformed following the COVID-19 pandemic. Their creativity, technical skill and persistence paid off.
UA’s Surveying Team members, from left, Andrew Angelini, Jackson Dengg, Tarolyn Kunkel, Rachel Freno, Olivia Lane and Caley Barnett earned second place at the ASCE regional competition.
The Surveying team also excelled, securing second place in a competitive field of peer institutions.
In the Technical Paper competition, Olivia Lane received second-place honors for her ethics paper, highlighting her thoughtful approach and clear communication.
Some members of UA’s Steel Bridge Team, from left, Ryan Bailey, Ben Komar, Jackson Dengg, Audrey Francis and Amelia Roch (captain), worked together to design, fabricate and assemble a full bridge in under two weeks for the ASCE regional competition.
Despite material delays, UA’s Steel Bridge team designed, fabricated and assembled a full bridge in under two weeks. While the bridge collapsed during the loading phase, the team's dedication and teamwork stood out. With many members returning next year, the team is already planning design improvements for future success.
“It’s a great year to be a Zip,” said Dr. David Roke, faculty advisor to the ASCE chapter. “From impressive build times to creative engineering and strong communication, our ASCE students truly represented the best of UA engineering. Congratulations to all who competed, and thanks to all who continue to support these teams — including faculty, alumni and industry partners who help make these experiences possible.”
